Legislator Calls: November 6, 2017

Calls Week of November 6

Before you make those calls: Read our Blog post on being an efficient caller.

Representative Schneider and Senators Duckworth and Durbin this week:

  • Tell Representative Schneider*:

    • Advocate for the economic rights of our poorest neighbors
      • Advocate for poor Americans who make less than $18,600 per year and for middle class families who stand to lose tax benefits
      • Thank Representative Schneider for speaking out on this issue in his statement.
  • Tell your Representative and Senators*:

  • Tell your Senators*:

    • Support a clean DREAM act
      • Thank Senator Durbin for Co-sponsoring the bill.
      • Urge Senator Duckworth to become a co-sponsor.
    • Oppose the nomination of Thomas Farr to a lifetime appointment to the US District Court
      • Hundreds of civil rights groups oppose him because of his demonstrated opposition to voting rights, workers’ rights, and civil rights. This appointment is dangerous for democracy.
      • Urge Senators Duckworth and Durbin to vote “No” on this nomination
*Q: Why do I tell my Representative and Senators different lists of issues? Why don’t I read them all the same script?
A: Because certain responsibilities originate in the House of Representative (tax bills start there) and other responsibilities originate in the Senate (confirmations of appointees).

Representative Brad Schneider

Phone Number – DC Office: 202-225-4835
Phone Number – Lincolnshire Office: 847-383-4870

Script for Schneider’s Call:

Script: Hi. I am [Name] from [Your town and Zip Code], calling about three issues. Do you have time to tally a few things?

First: the Republican tax plan. I want to thank Rep. Schneider for supporting middle class families and supporting the state and local tax (SALT) deduction and to advocate for not increasing the tax rate by 2% on poor Americans who make less than $18,600 per year. I support an ethical, fiscally-responsible tax plan that helps America’s poor and middle class.

Second: I would like Rep. Schneider to co-sponsor bill H.R. 4077 which protects voters from internet ads by having the same requirements for internet ads that TV and radio have adhered to for years. Especially in the wake of last year’s election. More transparency around the funding US political ads is a good thing.

Third: I am deeply concerned about the president’s ban that adds a form with religion-specific questions to the already in-depth screening process. I would like Rep. Schneider to oppose any travel ban based on the discriminatory policies from the Trump administration.

Thank them for their time and don’t forget to tell them that you are with North Shore Indivisible.

Senator Tammy Duckworth

Script for Duckworth’s Call:

Script: Hi. I am [Name] from [Your town and Zip Code], calling about four issues. Do you have time to tally a few things?

First: I would like Senator Duckworth to oppose the nomination of Thomas Farr to a lifetime appointment to the US District Court. Hundreds of civil rights groups oppose him because of his demonstrated opposition to voting rights, workers’ rights, and civil rights. This appointment is dangerous for democracy.

Second: I would like Senator Duckworth to co-sponsor bill S. 1989 which protects voters from internet ads by having the same requirements for internet ads that TV and radio have adhered to for years, especially in the wake of last year’s election. More transparency around the funding US political ads is a good thing.

Third: I am deeply concerned about the president’s travel ban that adds a form with religion-specific questions to the already in-depth screening process. I would like Senator Duckworth to oppose any travel ban based on the discriminatory policies from the Trump administration.

Fourth: I would like Senator Duckworth to co-sponsor a clean Dream Act. We need to ensure that immigrant youth can continue to go to school, work, and serve in the military but not in exchange for a border wall or increased deportation of other immigrants.

Thank them for their time and don’t forget to tell them that you are with North Shore Indivisible.
